Sitcom Improv, Folklife, Motown, and Dancing in the Park: Upcoming Seattle Events

As my friends know, I love planning ahead. Here are some fun events on my radar I thought you all might want to know about.

May 19 & 20: Very Special Episode at Jet City Improv

Very Special Episode” is an incredibly clever improv show at Jet City Improv in the U District that has its closing weekend this Thursday and Friday, May 19 & 20. Inspired by 80s and 90s sitcom episodes that took a moment to provide us with “teachable moments,” the direction of this show is superb and the cast is incredibly talented. I know it seems like it takes a lot of effort to turn off Netflix and get off your couch, but the laughter you’ll enjoy is SO worth it, people. Also, they serve popcorn. Prepare yourself: you will probably leave the show with a crush on at least two actors. BONUS: Your ticket purchase goes to support some seriously incredible youth outreach programs.  (Insert “The More You Know” music).

May 27-29: Northwest Folklife Festival at Seattle Center

This donation-only festival is one of the best in the region. Enjoy a wide variety of music and performances at the Northwest Folklife Festival at Seattle Center May 27 – 30. I love the poster artwork this year. Absolutely stunning!
May 31-June 12: Motown The Musical at The Paramount in downtown Seattle
Motown The Musical will tour onstage The Paramount Theatre in downtown May 31–June 12! This show celebrates the stories and songs of one of my favorite times in music history. Stay tuned for a future post on this show!
June 4: Parke Diem at Volunteer Park on Capitol Hill
parke diem
Parke Diem is a free day of DJ’ed music on June 4 at Volunteer Park. Bring your hula hoops and dance in the grass.

Pick Pocket: Podcasts, Movies, and what to do with Seattle tourists

I’m so grateful for my diverse, interesting, fun, and thoughtful group of friends and followers on Facebook! Here’s some insight on some lighthearted questions.

Like your favorite or add a new one if it hasn’t already been mentioned:

Wide variety of favorite podcasts.

about time

Favorite romantic comedies.

All time favorite movies.

What’s one thing you would do and one place you would eat in Seattle with out of town guests?

And then a question for my mom: best places in the Seattle area for chile rellenos. (I couldn’t find an appetizing photo of chile rellenos, so here’s a photo of a margarita).

Seattle’s King 5 (NBC) New Day Northwest invited me to be a guest on their show this week! Click here to watch the full segment.

“One local blogger has made it her mission to help the rest of us discover the hidden gems of Western Washington.”  – New Day Northwest

As a recap, my five picks for this appearance included:

SANCA – The School of Acrobatics and New Circus Arts in Georgetown! Take a Flying Trapeze class or drop in on Friday’s for their Pay-Per-Flight sessions. This fantastic school also offers series and one time classes in tumbling, aerial work, gymnastics, strength training, and more for kids and adults.

The Electric Boat Company – be captain for a day! These cute duffy boats in South Lake Union fit up to 10 people. You can bring your own picnic and wine with you for a gorgeous ride on the lake with family and friends.

Olympus Spa – One of my happy places. Their Lynnwood location features different temperature hot tubs, a cold plunge, sauna, steam room, and (my favorite)  multiple silent heated rooms. Don’t forget to try the bibimbap in stone pots in their Korean restaurant.

Seattle Chocolates – these are my favorite chocolates! Their “Here’s to You” flavor is Dark Chocolate Truffle with natural Turkish popping candy. Let it melt in your mouth for a delicious experience akin to pop rocks. Available at Bartell Drugs, PCC, and other shops around town.

Big Picture Theater – perfect for a date night or a fun experience with friends. This place has a total speakeasy feel to it, with comfortable little nooks to sit and chat before the show. This is a 21+ theatre. It has a fantastic bar AND you can pre-order a drink to be delivered to you during the movie. Be sure to order popcorn with white cheddar or truffle butter, served in swanky champagne buckets.

These fabulous businesses have provided gifts for me to giveaway to my readers in the coming days and weeks:

  • A Gift Card to SANCA good for tuition or merchandise.
  • A certificate to Olympus Spa in Lynnwood that includes a day pass, a body scrub, and a body moisturizing service. (Giveaway is now live on my blog!)
  • Treats from Seattle Chocolates – perfect gifts for Valentine’s Day.
  • A Movies & Martinis gift certificate from The Big Picture – includes movie passes and cocktails for two and a bucket of popcorn.

January Giveaways: Seattle fun + round trip tickets on Alaska Airlines!

Tomorrow, I’m appearing on New Day Northwest (King 5/NBC) to chat with Margaret Larson about five great Seattle businesses you should visit this year. In the coming weeks, I’ll be hosting some great giveaways from some of the businesses I talk about on the show. Stay tuned! You won’t want to miss these giveaways.

PLUS: I can’t reveal all the fun details yet, but later this month, I’ll be hosting a giveaway that includes two round-trip tickets on Alaska Airlines! I’m so excited to gift one of my readers with this fabulous prize.

Seattle Made Giftcard can be used at 27 local businesses

We all have hard-to-shop for family members on our list. Here’s a gift card option for the Seattleites on your list that is way more creative and unique than giving another gift card: The Seattle Made Gift Card!
These gift cards are good for 27 local businesses. From chocolate to coffee and booze to kombucha! Businesses that I’m most excited about: Molly Moon’s Ice Cream, Oola Distillery, and Pike Brewing Company.
This electronic gift card can be accessed by the recipients phone, so they don’t need to remember to bring a card with them when they visit businesses they can use it.
“Seattleites have tremendous local pride – we love to discover and enjoy the things made right here in our city,” said Christine Hanna, Co-Director of Seattle Good Business Network, which manages the Seattle Made initiative. “Now we have a fun, thoughtful way to give the gift of Seattle while supporting the local production of goods we love.”

Upcoming: Comedy, Crafts, and Lights

Three upcoming events I’m looking forward to that you might also enjoy:
This month, I’ll be back as a judge for the Seattle International Comedy Competition! While the event I’m judging is a private event at the Washington Athletic Club, you can attend the competition as an audience member on November 22nd at the Comedy Underground! There are also a few other shows coming up around the state, if you travel outside of Seattle. Details here. Excited to get my laugh on and see some incredible talent.
Alida, Erin, and I are hitting up the Urban Craft Uprising winter show at the Seattle Center. This event (Dec 5th & 6th this year) has become one of our favorite holiday traditions. I love this craft fair and have bought so many awesome things at past events. I’ve found awesome jewelry, wallets, wall art, delicious treats, and more. Great way to get shopping done for many people on your list and support independent artisans.
Get out your battery operated lights and visit Olympic Sculpture Park the night of December 17th for SAM Lights. There will be live music, art activities, and a light installation. I’m planning on lighting my outfit to be part of the fun. Facebook event page here. Oh, did I mention it’s free? Thanks, SAM!
P.S. Don’t forget “The Atomic Bombshells…Lost in Space” is Nov 19 – 21!
What events in November and December are YOU looking forward to?

Yup, that’s me in City Arts Magazine for Goodwill!

I’ve had fun this month hearing from friends that they spotted me in the Goodwill ad in City Arts Magazine (a free arts publication in Seattle):

Screen Shot 2015-07-27 at 4.12.49 PM

Thanks to my friend Joey at City Arts for thinking of me for this modeling gig! Did you know that Goodwill is a non-profit and proceeds from items sold in their stores benefit free job training and education for those in need? All the more reason to shop and donate to Goodwill over other (for-profit) used shops. Last year, Goodwill helped over 9,200 people! pop-up shop at Westlake Center June 20 and 21 – Father’s Day Weekend

I’m a big fan of – great prices and totally convenient. On June 20 and 21, they’re bringing some products to their “Pop Up Pop Shop” at Westlake Center in Downtown Seattle.

Swing by 11am – 6pm both days to shop for Father’s Day inspired gifts, enjoy hot dogs from Dante’s Inferno food truck, a social photo activation, putting green (with golf-pros that can help give you tips) and the chance to win tickets to the big golf match on Sunday. Based on my score from mini-golf with friends this last weekend, I better take some notes!

Check out some men’s fashion on their Pinterest board.

Disclosure: provided me with a gift card for this post, but I only share content I think readers will enjoy! All opinions are my own.

Metropolitan Market Kitchen Sale July 18 – 21

Metropolitan Market has fantastic flower section and deli but I’ve also found myself strolling through their houseware departments at times going home with fun finds. One of my favorite kitchenwares I got from Metropolitan Market – a green, flexible steamer.  I use it regularly to steam asparagus before I throw it into my stir fry mix.
Why am I mentioning Metropolitan Market today? Well here’s the scoop – their annual Housewares sale is July 18 – 21 & has every kitchen tool you need to cook dinner party food, any dish you desire as well as a completely crave-able collection of cookbooks, linens, and kitchen accessories-all up to 70% off!
I’m definitely hitting the sale (and picking up some flowers too!).  Products on my wish list are Le Crueset cookware in yellow (swoon!) and one of Metropolitan Market’s beautiful serving dish (need more of those in my life!) and some cutting boards (the ones I have need replacing!)
Disclaimer – Metropolitan Market is providing me with a $25 gift card in exchange for this post, but that said, I was already a fan of their shops and their houseware department – seriously great gifts for the chefs in your life! As always, free doesn’t change my opinion and I only share what I think my friends and readers will appreciate knowing. Who doesn’t like a sale, anyway?! Also, Metropolitan Market has an awesome youtube channel featuring local chefs shopping at MM! Pretty cool!

Organizing just got easier with ThreebyThree – Shop Seattle + Giveaway!

Organizing has never been one of my strong suits. As a kid, my mom would send me to my room to clean it and find me later buried in a pile of books reading. I would always try to convince her that I was just arranging them as part of the cleaning process (as piles of clothes surrounded me). Somehow she saw right through that!
As an adult, the skill of keeping organized has seemed out of reach. I realized recently part of the reason I never have everything in its place is because I never had a place for everything. Glad to say: with the support of my boyfriend (who is very organized), things are changing! I finally got a wardrobe organizer for my room and am now having fun finding a place for everything.  That said, “Where are my keys” is a common thought I have when trying to run out the door. I have my boyfriend call my phone (or use if he’s not around – a lifesaver) to find that on a regular basis.  This madness has to stop.
Thankfully, my new shelf from Three by Three is the perfect solution.
3 shelf
This Seattle brand contacted me again (check out my past review of them, here) to see if I was interested in trying out some of their new products. PERFECT TIMING! While this shelf can be used for anything, really, I’m using mine to keep my keys and cell phone when I’m at home. It’s got the fun feature of being magnetic and comes with a magnetic hook and a few magnets to hang notes to self or fun photos too! Their products are super cute and I can’t resist the twitter bird magnets – a must have for any social media manager!
3 magnets
Want to win a ThreebyThree shelf (your choice in color – I went with white) and set of bird magnets? Check out the rafflecopter form on ways you can enter here. (Hint, start by leaving a comment on the blog and then visit the rafflecopter to get credit for your post).
Do you have tips on staying organized? Please let me know in the comments below! I’m SO ready to turn over this new leaf in life!
Disclaimer: Three by Three contacted me to see if I wanted a complimentary product. My opinions are my own and not changed because of the free factor. As with anything, I only post things on this blog that I truly enjoy and think others would too!
Note: ThreebyThree ships but only in the United States.
