Weekly Roundup: Tony Award winner, hot pot, artist studios, and three winter words

by Keridwyn Deller

Hi friends! Here are some experiences you might enjoy – both things to do at home and out on the town in Seattle:

A Tony-Award Winning Musical stops in for just a few days

“Kimberly Akimbo” won FIVE Tony-Awards in 2023, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Book of a Musical. And we’re lucky enough to have the Broadway tour swinging by for a few days in Seattle at The Paramount Theatre (this week, January 7 – 12, 2025). My friend Karianne (a musical theatre connoisseur, one might say), in a reply text when I asked her what she thought of this show, said: “…very different. Funny, moving, heartbreaking. I’m excited to see it again!” Read the full (truly interesting and unique) plot and check out ticket availability, here.

Brunch dish I’m craving

It’s been a while since I sat down to brunch with a friend or date at Portage Bay Cafe and I caught myself daydreaming about their eggs benedict and their french toast that includes a trip to their “Toppings Bar” where you can add all the berries, fruit, and whipped cream your heart desires. “Eat like you give a damn” is the cute phrase on their mugs (photo evidence here – clearly I was SO happy to be out to brunch with Cecily!). Useful fun fact: They are open for brunch on both weekends and weekdays. Definitely make reservations ahead of time.

My favorite warm meal out in cold weather

Winter is my least favorite season (cold & dark, no thanks) but one of the benefits of it is how PERFECT hot pot is to enjoy when it’s cold outside. Morfire is not only my favorite hot pot spot, it’s of my favorite restaurants in Seattle. Locally owned and on Capitol Hill just a bit east of Cal Anderson Park, you can order all ingredients a la cart, including lotus root, bok choy, enoki mushrooms, delicious beef slices, and much more. I recommend getting the Tom Kha broth, add the sesame sauce at the table to some of the items once they are cooked, and try the snow mushrooms (I just discovered these treats for the first time on a date night with Brandon last month and I adore their unique texture). I recommend making reservations for this smallish cute spot on the hill. If you go and enjoy something in particular on the menu, let me know!

Local Art Open Studios this Saturday

Equinox Studios hosts their delightful Artist Open Studios again on Saturday, January 11 from 6 – 9 pm! Part of their brief description on their Facebook event page includes: “Bonfires & General Mischief (as always!)” The vibe there is awesome, one of my favorite art spaces in Seattle! Details, here.

Upcoming live theatre I’m excited for:

I’m looking forward to going to The Last Five Years at ACT Theatre. This is another co-production between ACT and The 5th Avenue Theatre. This winner of two drama desk awards is “an unforgettable chronicle through the joy and ache of love.” I’m not really learning much more about it on purpose since I want to go in to the show spoiler-free but I hear from many that it’s a good show (and I’ve really enjoyed past co-productions between ACT and The 5th, including their production of “Urinetown” a few years back).

I’m also planning on seeing Hamilton for a second time (well, third, I suppose, if you count watching the pro-shot movie version of the stage show) and I can already recall the electric feeling that show gives its audience as I look forward to that next visit to The Paramount Theatre.

Podcasts I’m listening to:

I’m sticking with my two favorites: “Handsome” (a quite pointless and ridiculously funny chat between comedians Tig Notoro, Mae Martin, and Fortune Feimster) and “Mike Birbiglia’s Working it Out” – he’s a fab comedian and all around great guy and has a ton of guest comedians on his show one by one. There are a few elements to this show that make it particularly appealing to me – look through the episodes and start with an episode where the guest is a comedian you really like. I recommend watching both of these podcasts on youtube if you can, because they are all adorable funny humans.

My three Winter Words

Some of you know that I like to pick three words each season to live by and center around. This Winter, my words are: Intentional, Unhurried, and Open-Hearted.

Happy January, y’all!

Sending you love,

Keridwyn
