Spotlight On: Holiday laughs, binge-worthy sci-fi, 3pm dancing…and Santagories!

by Keridwyn Deller

Happy mid-December, friends! Here’s a round-up of events and experiences you’ll want to know about:

A favorite Seattle holiday tradition (now – 12/23):

Earlier this week, I was thrilled to enjoy one of my favorite holiday traditions: seeing The Improv Christmas Carol at Unexpected Productions in Pike Place Market!

My talented friend Paul Levy was starring in the role of Scrooge that night (there are two actors for each role so they each can do half of the performances). It felt so good to share a bunch of laughs with friends and strangers in the audience. This truly is one of my favorite holiday traditions. The show continues now through December 23. Tickets here.

In their own words:  “An Improvised Christmas Carol takes Dickens’ classic holiday tale and turns it into a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud adventure where anything can happen. Guided by audience suggestions, our talented cast creates an entirely unique performance every night, blending over 30 unexpected ideas into a hilarious and heartwarming story. From surprising twists to brand-new characters, no two shows are ever the same.”

Two shows I’m currently obsessed with:

I currently love Thursdays. Because that’s the day of the week that AppleTV drops a new episode of Pluribus. I can’t wait until I hear of friends who are caught up with this show so we can talk about it! It’s sci-fi. I want to be as spoiler free as possible. This show is modern-day sci-fi. Something happens to most – but not all – of the people on earth. We follow the experience of one of the people who isn’t affected. Picture me enthusiastically recommending this show to you and go watch it. (Or, sure, watch a preview if you need to know more.) I rarely want to binge a show but this one I can’t get enough of.

What other AppleTV shows do you recommend? I’ll have this streaming service for a couple more months. I am currently trying to pace myself and savor every episode of “Shrinking” Season 2 because I adore that show: there’s nothing like it. (Though I do find myself moaning “Noooooooo, don’t do it!!” to characters a lot more this season, come to think of it.) Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, and Jason Segal give us comedic gold as the show navigates through some heavy subjects. There’s nothing quite like this show.

3pm-8pm Dancing?! Yes, please.

You know I LOVE an afternoon/early evening dance! Shameless Productions (the folks who bring us Deck’d Out each summer!) have teamed up with Uniting Souls and Viva for awesome dance events at Monkey loft this fall and winter. Their Reverie Society Sunday series continues on December 21 and December 28 from 3-8pm. Details & tickets here. I had a great time dancing at Reverie Society Sundays this Fall with Brenna and Clover and look forward to going back this winter. (Did I take photos when I was out dancing with friends? No, I did not. Facepalm. Maybe in 2026 I’ll be better at remembering to snap photos during fun friend outings? Well, the memories are good, regardless.

New Year’s DAY dancing (4 am – 4 pm!)

Speaking of Shameless Productions (“Keeping it weird since 2003” as they state on their website), a unique event of theirs, “The Breakfast Club,” is back for one day only: New Year’s Day! Get out and dance from 4am-4pm. Some of the crowd will still be up from NYE shenanigans and some of the crowd will get some sleep before heading out to The Breakfast Club. Details and tickets here.

(I was stoked to see there is a “low-key non-theme, officially unofficial unsanctioned theme” for folks who want to dress up in The Breakfast Cereal Club theme! So clever. Reminds me of the fun “Breakfast Club” song by Z-Trip (featuring Supernatural and Murs). Check out Shameless’s Instagram and Facebook posts. Tickets here.

The (Audio)Books friends are raving about

While I don’t usually write about books I haven’t read, I’d be remiss to not mention Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman simply based on the joy that Brandon, Don, Caitlin, and other friends get from this series. I hear the audiobooks are particularly fun, if you like listening.

Personally, I’ve been down my own rabbit hole of even more audiobooks by stand-up comedians alongside audiobooks that relate to my work as a Hypnotherapist (shout out to Chatter: The Voice in Our Head, Why it Matters and How to Harness It” by Ethan Kross). Check out my goodreads here to scroll through books I’ve read. What have you read this year that you recommend?

HOLIDAY GAME: SANTAGORIES!

It wouldn’t be a Seattle Pockets December without pulling out my “Santagories” sheets (the holiday-themed prompts I created during the height of the pando – to be used with the classic game of Scattergories). The continued popularity of that post brings me a lot of joy and you can bet I’ll be playing it again this year with my family in Kingston.

Happy Holidays, everyone! Sending you lots of love,

Keridwyn
