Today we welcome guest blogger (and my mom), Jeanne Deller, with her review of the musical “Once” (at The Paramount Theatre in downtown Seattle, now through June 8th):
We were delighted, upon early entry, to find the cast on stage jamming and dancing in full swing. Adding to the merriment were audience members who had joined them to mingle and “tip a pint” in the beautifully staged Irish Pub.
High energies abound as the cast of quirky characters blaze into and through their creative challenges. Dani de Waal’s quietly endearing Czech persona lends an added dimension to the mystique of this (mostly) unrequited love.
Folksy costuming, choreography, instrumentation, and set designs keep the audience rooted in Irish environs throughout. If you’re one of those who absorbs musical scores – rest assured you’ll not be the only one humming the hauntingly beautiful “Falling Slowly” as you exit the theatre.
