UPDATE: The show was a BLAST! It’s a totally candy coated version of her story, with the real focused being on her art, music, and influences, not on her drug use and death. While I could do without the terrible song they wrote for the end of the show (“I’m going to rock my way to heaven…” – REALLY?) all of the Janis songs (and amazing songs by her influences) were on point.
If you haven’t got tickets yet, you should come rock out at The 5th’s official opening night this Thursday 3/31 using our special $5 ticket price www.5thavenue.org/ALMOSTFREE.

I still remember how blown away I was when, looking through my dad’s records, I pulled Janis Joplin’s album “Pearl” from the sleeve and listened to the artist’s sultry voice for the very first time. I would played that album (especially side two with personal favorites “Me and Bobby McGee” and “Mercedes Benz”) again and again, letting those songs become some of my all time favorites to sing along with.
When The 5th Avenue Theatre announced the show “A Night with Janis” was part of their season, I was ecstatic. And now it’s finally here! The show runs March 25 – April 17. I can only imagine how incredibly strong a singer the lead, Kacee Clanton, must be – what a role to take on. Clanton played the role on Broadway in this production, so it’s exciting to have her be part of this tour. The show will celebrate not only the music of Janis but also her musical influences, including Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Nina Simone, Bessie Smith, and more.
