Spotlight on: Comedy Book, SIX, Protests, Bishop Briggs & more (April 25, 2025)

by Keridwyn Deller

Here’s a new “Spotlight On!” post – entertainment and beyond that I’ve been enjoying or am looking forward to.

BOOK I FINISHED: “Comedy Book: How Comedy Conquered Culture―and the Magic That Makes It Work” by Jesse David Fox. If you’re also a fan of stand-up comedy, it’s likely you’ll enjoy this journey through the history of comedy and its impact on society and community. It’s both light and thoughtprovoking. It also introduced me to some new-to-me comedians who I’ve started checking out.

LIVE THEATRE: Seattle Rep’s “Laughs in Spanish.” My mom and I headed to the Seattle Rep to see their new production this week. Full of one-liners & telenovella-teasing, slightly bigger than life comedy, it was a sweet, enjoyable 90 minutes (where we did laugh out loud). The actors were well cast and fun to watch. While I didn’t feel the urge to rush out and tell everybody to make sure they saw this show, I enjoyed the upbeat music and the smiles it put on our faces. “Laughs in Spanish” plays now through May 17, 2025.

SOMEBODY TO CHECK OUT: Stand-up comedian Rachel Feinstein. She returned as a guest on Mike Birbiglia’s “Working it Out” podcast. My first impression of her was that she wasn’t going to be for me but…well, she’s so damn funny and quick-witted. I’m a big fan, even though I’m guessing some of our ideologies may differ (or maybe that’s just me and her husband) 🤷🏻‍♀️😊She’s on Mike’s podcast here and here. And her special, “Big Guy,” is on Netflix.

UPCOMING PROTEST: MAY 1. Nation-wide. In the Seattle area, there’s a protest at Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill, in Redmond, Kingston, Bainbridge, and more. Where-ever you are, nation-wide, find your protest here.

MUSIC ON REPEAT: Bishop Briggs. Until recently, I was only familiar with Bishop Brigg‘s song “River.” But I am heart-first down the rabbit hole of her music now and I can’t get enough. I try not to have regrets, but I do wish I had seen her live when she was in Seattle recently! Check out “Tattooed on my Heart,” “In Your Eyes” and her cover of “Paint it, Black.”

SHOW I’M STOKED TO SEE FOR THE FIRST TIME: “SIX: The Musical.” It sounds ridiculous, playful and fun. Date night with B! “SIX: The Musical” plays The Paramount in Seattle May 6 – 11, 2025. I’m preparing myself to want  👏🏼 every 👏🏼 single  👏🏼 outfit in  👏🏼 this  👏🏼 show.
In their words: “From Tudor Queens to Pop Icons, the six wives of Henry VIII take the microphone to remix five hundred years of historical heartbreak into a Euphoric Celebration of 21st-century girl power! SIX won 23 awards in the 2021/2022 Broadway season, including the Tony Award® for Best Original Score (Music and Lyrics) and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical.”

  1. Good to see you and your dad at Life of Pi recently. You’ll love Six, I’m looking forward to seeing it again at STG. Until then, take care.
