Dynamic “Porgy and Bess” plays 5th Avenue Theatre through June 29th (REVIEW)

Guest reviewer, Jeanne Deller (my lovely mom):

Catfish Row’s hauntingly dark backdrop set the tone in act one for “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess,” now playing at The 5th Avenue Theatre until June 29th. This production is a little weighty for the faint of heart – even for those of us who have been forever hooked on Gershwins’ fabulous show tunes.

Top of the evening crowd pleasers were Mariah’s (Danielle Lee Graves) rendition of “I Hates Your Struttin’ Style” and Porgy’s (Nathanial Stampley) “I Got Plenty of Nothin’.” As my guest noted at the close of the performance, it was difficult to understand many of the vocalists  – possibly an issue with mikes?

This dynamic Broadway National Tour Ensemble wowed the audience with their riveting, well-orchestrated choreography throughout.  Overall, another invigorating, spellbinding 5th Avenue production. Go for it!
