I’m a big fan of SAM and all the incredible programing they offer at their three locations (Seattle Art Museum, the Asian Art Museum, and Olympic Sculpture Park) throughout the year.
The My Favorite Things tours at Seattle Art Museum bring community figures, opinionated artists, cultural producers, and more into the galleries to discuss their favorite works of art. These one-of-a-kind events are free with museum admission. It’s incredibly interesting to experience the galleries through the eyes of others. Here are the My Favorite Things tours, coming in January:
On January 7, Velocity Dance Center’s Artistic Director Tonya Lockyer will lead a tour. This is also one of the last days to see “Intimate Impressionism from the National Gallery of Art” which closes January 10.
On January 14, local composer and music artist Gust Burns will lead a My Favorite Things tour. Burns’ work utilizes multiple materials and procedures in creating performances, scores and texts.
Each tour begins at 6:30 pm.
SAM’s My Favorite Things tours have inspired a video series by the same name. Most recently, artist Alejandro Guzman discusses one of his favorite pieces at SAM—Mercedes Benz Coffin by Ghanaian artist Kane Quaye:
Other upcoming SAM events to note:
January 23, February 20, and March 19: Winter Weekends at Olympic Sculpture Park. Free with RSVP. #SAMWinter events include “Kids’ Saturdays in the Park” from 11 am–2 pm as well as adult focused “Art Encounters in the Park” at 7 pm.
February 11: Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic exhibition opens at Seattle Art Museum (closes May 8). I can’t wait to see this vibrant exhibition in person.
March 11: #SAMRemix returns. This event always sells out and is one of my all-time favorite Seattle events. Check out their Facebook event page. I’ll be in Philadelphia that night (celebrating Brandon’s Great Grandma Flo’s 100th birthday!) but you should ABSOLUTELY go. Remix events happen only a few times a year and I’m sad to miss it this time around.
This is just a taste of some of the events happening at SAM. Check out their calendar for a full list of events.
