RENT at the Paramount (Giveaway), Walla Walla Wines, my new favorite podcast & Ignite Seattle

Happy Sunday!
I have so many fun things I want to share with everyone, so here’s a miscellany of events and things I’ve enjoyed lately:
RENT
One of the most beloved musicals, RENT, is coming back to the Paramount Theatre for just a few days this month. See the musical February 21-26. You can also enter to win one of two pairs of tickets from the giveaway we are co-hosting with Swink Style Bar! Giveaway here.
About RENT: In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway…and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. And now, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring production. A re-imagining of Puccini’sLa BohèmeRENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters—love.

NEW PODCAST
The Hilarious World of Depression” is my favorite new podcast. “Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me” host John Moe talks with a different comedian each episode about their experiences with depression and anxiety. I love that this podcast is working to take the stigma away from this common disease and encourage frank, genuine conversation about it! He’s a great host and the comedians he has as guests are some of my favorites.

IGNITE SEATTLE
I went to my first Ignite Seattle event last November to see my friend Jeff Hicks who was one of the speakers. As soon as I saw that Ignite Seattle will be back February 23, I bought tickets (super affordable tickets, at that). These events tend to sell out so snag yours soon.
About Ignite Seattle:
This legendary evening of short and fascinating presentations that started in Seattle 10 years ago, has a simple goal “Enlighten us, but make it quick.” 16 passionate Seattleites are given five minutes at the microphone to inspire, inform, entertain or do all at the same time. It’s a reinvention of the very idea of a lecture, offering an exciting and provocative evening of storytelling for all ages.

My journey in decluttering & organizing for a happier and less consumerist life

Slowly over the last two years I’ve been decluttering and trying to organize the stuff in my life. I’m now diving in and making it a top priority for many reasons but here are the top two:

  1. I believe I will be happier, more content, and more at peace when I have less “stuff.” I want to choose to have only things that bring me joy and what I truly need. Creating space and order will give me peace of mind that will help me be happier in other areas of life.
  2. I want to be less of a consumer. I want to stop buying for the rush that buying something new can give us. I want to quiet the part of the mind that has been affected by marketing telling me I’ll be happier if I have this THING. I want to have more financial freedom to DO more because I buy less (and make choices that are better for the environment and my personal “environment.”)

There are a host of other reasons why I want to get rid of more and have a home for everything I own. But those are the big two. To be content, happy, and at peace and to buy less.

I’m going to document this journey on Medium as I’ll likely be posting more often than my Seattle Pockets audience would enjoy. At medium.com/@keridwyn, I’ll share my thoughts, achievements, setbacks, and tips I learn along the way. Some of it might be quite specific but hopefully I’ll be providing value to some of you who are looking to do the same thing in your lives.

Are you prepared for an earthquake or other disaster?

I attended a Disaster Skills Basic Aid class this month in South Lake Union. This free event was put on by the City of Seattle’s Office of Emergency Management. Thanks to Matt Auflick for his excellent teaching skills. He mentioned the city will be launching some training videos on their website in the coming months. When I hear about them, I’ll be sure to share.
In the meanwhile:
This Disaster Preparedness instructional booklet has a TON of great information. Thanks to the people of Tokyo for producing a version in english.
Register for the free Earthquake Home Retrofit class on December 3.
Register for one of the free Stop the Bleed classes. Blood loss is the leading cause of preventable death in multiple casualty events, like mass shootings, terrorist attacks, and earthquakes. Help save a life while waiting for emergency services to arrive. December and January classes are full but you can still get a seat in the February, March, April, or May class.

If you’re worried about the power going out in the #SeattleStorm of 2016…

What if every Seattleite who is worried about their power going out during this weekend’s storm took a moment to donate just $10 to the homeless shelter of their choice? Can you imagine the impact we could have as a community?

Tonight, I’m grateful for the roof over my head. Because losing power (and internet! OMG!) is nothing compared to out in the cold, blustery elements.

Tonight, I’m donating $50 to DESC. Join me in donating to them (or your favorite shelter organization)!

If you have a favorite homeless shelter organization, please feel free to tell me about it in the comments. I’d love to learn who YOU support and why.

Five pockets (Giveaway, figs, duets, organization & guns)

Here are five “pockets”  that I thought y’all might appreciate this week!

My client Swink Style Bar is co-hosting a free event with Susan Grace Skincare on June 2 + they’ve launched a giveaway for a free blowout and a trio of skincare products to celebrate. You can enter to win via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or all three.

Blue Ribbon

My Mom, Dad, and fiancé had an incredible tasting with caterer Blue Ribbon Culinary Center this week. We’re going to try some more potential caterers for our wedding in Seattle, but this place really impressed us and is definitely on our list. The port-infused goat cheese and fig bruschetta was one of our favorites.

“Tonight You Belong to Me”

I rediscovered this gem on youtube this week of a dad and daughter singing a duet.  Still one of the cutest things on the internet:

OneTab

OneTab

This is one of my favorite google chrome extensions. One of my bad online habits is having too many tabs open at once. With a click of a button, OneTab collects all your tabs onto one page for you to easily delete what you no longer need to view and keep the rest on the list to reference later.Total game changer!

Everytown for Gun Safety

The “Inside Amy Schumer” show introduced me to an organization called “Everytown” an organization focused on bringing together Americans to end gun violence and build safer communities. Every day, 91 Americans are killed by gun violence. Let’s work together to educate the masses and make a change.

And then a question for my mom: best places in the Seattle area for chile rellenos. (I couldn’t find an appetizing photo of chile rellenos, so here’s a photo of a margarita).
